- Abstract
The article discusses the experience of poet Philip Freneau as a prisoner of war during the American Revolutionary war as depicted in the poem "The British Prison Ship." It comments on the transformation of Freneau from observer of the revolutionary war to political propagandist, three cantos contained in the poem, and questions on the biographical facts of the experience.
