- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the history of the Revenue Cutter brigantine vessel the "Harriet Lane." The political conditions of the nation and the Revenue Cutter Service, predecessor to the U.S. Coast Guard, is reviewed. The Harriet Lane's influential career during the Civil War and afterwards is outlined, including initiating the conflict at Fort Sumter in August 1861 and her later placement on the Texan coast. The sinking and legacy of the ship is also mentioned.
