- Abstract
On that score and myriad others, French has ensured that debates about Lula, cunning, and their implications for left politics in Brazil and beyond can henceforth move forward on firmer ground. And while French does not hide his own admiration for Lula and his politics, his aim is another: to give an account of Lula on his own terms rather than those projected onto him. Early in his extraordinary new book, John French recounts how in 1960 a thenteenaged Luiz Inácio da Silva gained admission to the prestigious training program that would set him on an unlikely path to become president of Brazil.
