- Abstract
The article examines the relationship between Taiwan and China over key historical periods to determine what constitutes a healthy balance in cross-strait relations. Topics discussed include the reunification of Taiwan with China, the Hans Chinese regimes that controlled the Chinese mainland, and Taiwan's process of democratization. Also mentioned are the importance of democracy to the U.S. and its allies, the presidency of Ma Ying-jeou, and Taiwan during the 1970s.
