- Title
LA CARTE ET LE TERRITOIRE: MAPPING, PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE VISUALIZATION OF CONTEMPORARY FRANCE.
- Authors
WELCH, EDWARD
- Abstract
The article looks at how visual imagery and photography impact the understanding of national territory and identity in modern France. It discusses how this concept is portrayed in the novel "La Carte et le territorie" by Michel Houellebecq as well as in the photographs of rural France taken by Raymond Depardon in the early 21st-century. The author suggests that Depardon's depiction of provincial life promotes the use of photography in recording identity and spatial territory.
