- Abstract
This article explores the relationship between the oral microbiome and the host, specifically focusing on how disruptions in this relationship can lead to chronic inflammation and disease, such as periodontitis. It also discusses the role of metabolism in oral and systemic health, emphasizing how dysfunction in the oral microbiota and host metabolism can impact each other and contribute to disease development. The special issue includes original articles and reviews that provide recent advances in understanding host-microbial interactions, inflammation, and metabolism in periodontal disease and associated systemic conditions. The authors stress the importance of understanding this relationship for the development of effective therapeutic interventions. Another article in the special issue, "Molecular Oral Microbiology," delves into the study of microorganisms in the mouth and their impact on oral health. It highlights the complex interactions between bacteria, viruses, and fungi in the oral cavity and their role in various oral diseases. The article also discusses the use of molecular techniques to identify and study these microorganisms, which can provide valuable insights for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
