- Abstract
During the lifetime of concrete reinforced structures, happens that the ultimate capacity of the element is not anymore adequate to the static and dynamic functions requested by the project, mainly caused from deterioration of the concrete or the change of the destination and the purpose of the element. Externally bonded FRP may be used in a repair capacity for structures that have moderate earthquakes damages or to reinforce structures considered to be vulnerable or substandard. The FRP strengthening systems are used mainly for flexural and shear strengthening of the members subjected to bending moments and shear forces larger than their flexural and shear capacity, especially the beam-column joints. In this paper, reference is made to the appropriate confinement of reinforced concrete members under concentric or slightly eccentric force, that need improvements of their structural performance, especially columns. The confinement of the columns is realised by laminates for regular face members or bidirectional FRP sheets disposed along the perimeter as both continuous and non-continuous external wrapping and adaptable to the shape of the member to be strengthened. In the paper are taken different square cross section reinforced concrete columns with different longitudinal reinforcement ratios and are compared the changes of M-N interaction diagrams for not confined and full FRP confined columns with one and two wrapped FRP layers. The paper aim is to study the effect of the cross section dimensions, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio and the number of wrapped FRP layers on the axial capacity of square columns.
