- Abstract
Different languages can express similar meanings using morpho-syntactically distinct expressions. This paper examines the relative viability of syntactic and semantic analyses of such phenomena on the basis of a case study of the distribution and interpretation of tenses in English, Japanese and Russian temporal adjunct clauses. The formal semantic analysis developed in the paper accounts for the variation on the basis of the meanings of the tenses and the temporal connectives realized in these constructions. The semantic analysis is argued to be both empirically and theoretically superior to previous, more syntactic analyses.
