- Abstract
The last wave of enlargement was another historic step in a series of further unification of Europe. With ten new countries that joined in 2004, two in 2007, this round of the EU enlargement is the largest both in number of countries, and in population. Generally speaking, the most obvious feature of the last enlargement is that it merged the countries that have undergone severe economic, social and political development. It was practically a milestone in the unification of Europe after decades of artificial separation which was a result of the Cold War.
