- Abstract
The anthology "Towards a Critique of Participatory Research" by Sabine Flick and Alexander Herold examines the possibilities of a scientific critique of society within the framework of participatory research. The volume deals with the democratization of the relationship between researchers and those being researched, as well as the development of a collaborative research practice. The potentials and pitfalls of this research perspective are discussed, particularly in the field of social work. The anthology includes contributions from authors at various stages of qualification, including students, doctoral candidates, and professors. The publication offers a sophisticated discourse on participatory research and highlights connections to Critical Theory. However, it is criticized that the focus on marginalized life worlds can lead to a paternalization of the research context. The authors suggest reflecting more strongly on the normative and epistemological premises of participatory research. The anthology provides an interesting exploration of critical questions and is also worth reading for readers outside the field of participatory social research.
