- Abstract
In Schäffer's contribution, "possibilities and limits" of the integration of current media techniques into the research process are examined, especially, however, the extension of software supporting documentary interpretation by AI. He focuses on analogies between so-called "deep learning" architectures of AI and "deep interpretation", by which he refers to the heuristic procedural logics of reconstructive methods (Przyborski/Wohlrab-Sahr 2021). Both forms of transforming data are, as Schäffer shows, operations that can be explicated in principle, but not (anymore) in the concrete temporal sequence of the particular steps. Therefore, in his view, they cannot be methodologized. In addition, he deplores the rapid disappearance of the discussion of the epistemic significance of media technologies after they have found their way into research routines. Both lines of argumentation are critically discussed in order to show how different media technologies, which are not only constitutive for the scientific field but also for everyday life in so-called Western societies, can be systematically integrated into an intersubjectively verifiable research process. Epistemic considerations play a central role in this process.
