- Abstract
This study sought to determine whether physique protection, hiding or covering aspects of one's own physique from others, should be included as a key characteristic of muscle dysmorphia. Participants were 114 collegiate weight training males who completed the Muscle Dysmorphia Inventory (MDI) and identified the type of clothing they wore in a gym setting. Analyses for both upper and lower body clothing against the MDI Physique Protection subscale were non-significant. Function and comfort were the most cited reasons for clothing worn, although upper body clothing elicited more responses directed toward participants' appearance. Physique protection needs to be better defined and understood before it should be considered as a core characteristic of muscle dysmorphia.
