- Title
'SAMSON IN SENGHENNYDD': ROUGH MUSIC AND ROUGH PLAY IN WALES 1880 - 1914.
- Authors
Williams, Gareth
- Abstract
The article discusses the overlaps between the choral stage and rugby field in Wales from 1880 to 1914. The same need by what were essentially new industrial communities for a sense of identity are demonstrated by the two cultures. An oratorio concert was announced in the genuine headline "Samson in Senghennydd" instead of the visit of a circus strongman in the industrial village of Aber valley on the boundary of Glamorgan and Gwent. The temperance choral unions of the mid-nineteenth century which were often large in number are considered to originate Welsh choralism.
