- Abstract
In this article I will work on the transformations occurred, in the last tem years, in the sport press coverage of the Olympic Games, regarding gender issues. Analysis like Knijnik and Souza's (2004) and Romero's (2005) have pointed how the press, in general, privileges the coverage of masculine athletes and events, leaving women participation in a secondary position. On the other hand, Guedes (1998) and Toledo (2002) allow us identify how this analysis should be mediated by the almost absolute hegemony that the soccer coverage inflicts in relation to the other sports. Therefore, starting from a specific case - the space dedicated on television and in a major newspaper in Rio de Janeiro to the follow up of the Brazilian team in the 2006 Winter Olympic Games - I will discuss how these events reinforce, more than the differences among sexes, the celebration of the victory which ends up accommodating a specific "gender identity", detached from the biological referential of sex.
