- Abstract
Introduction Breakthrough Cancer Pain (BtCP) is a transient exacerbation of pain that occurs in cancer patients with controlled basic pain. It is important to recognize and manage it because, if not properly treated, it is associated with a deterioration in the patient's quality of life. The aim of this study is to describe the nursing approach to BtCP, in the Hospices of the north-east Piedmont area, in terms of definition, evaluation and management, to highlight any need for specific training interventions. Methods A multi-center cross-sectional descriptive study was performed at th Hospices of the selected area. A multiple-choice questionnaire was used and provided to the nurses who accepted to participate in the study. Data were processed with the statistical processing software STATA 13. Results Five out of six centres and 97% of eligible nurses agreed to partecipate. 80% of them were already trained on pain management, but they felt the need for targeted training on BtCP. Professionals with experience ≥5 years in palliative care and those who had received pain training courses proved to be better qquipped to deal with the problem. Conclusions Compared to previous evidence, the nurses' knowledge about BtCP showed improved but disparities in the approach still persisted. The study showed a demand for more training in this field in order to increase the nurses' confidence in clinical practice and make the management and assessing skills of BtCP more homogeneous, with subsequent positive outcomes on the quality of nursing care.
