- Abstract
The bronze hoard from Brno-Řečkovice represents a typical assemblage of fragmented artefacts (42 pieces) with a dominant share of tools (mainly axes and sickles) dating to the early phase of the Middle Danubian Urnfield culture (Mušov 2 hoard horizon, stage Ha A1). With regard to the presence of rare forging gear - hammers and anvils - an analysis of all finds of these tools from Moravia is presented in their central European context. A deformed sheet metal fragment as an additional non-standard artefact in the hoard was reconstructed as a Lúčky-type conical helmet which, besides the find in the hoard from Služín, is the second specimen of this protective gear in Moravia. The collected results from the spectral analyses of the hammers, anvils and helmets testify to the fully intentional composition of the bronze alloy, reflecting the technological and functional qualities of these artefacts. Based on the co-occurrence of casting and forging tools in hoards and graves, it can be concluded that, in addition to general metallurgists, specialised casters and forgers (smiths) could already have been independently active in the Urnfield period. The hoard from Brno-Řečkovice is tied to a smith, and its deposition on the slope of the promontory in the unique landscape formation of the Řečkovice depression could indicate its ritual significance.
