- Abstract
The goal of this paper was to evaluate Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) by transthoracic echocardiography in patients with Diffuse Systemic Scleroderma (DSS) without clinically diagnosed arterial pulmonary hypertension (PAH) in comparison with Rheumatoid Arthritis patients (RA). TAPSE is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that may predict future development of PAH and consequently have impact on dysfunction of right heart ventricle. The prospective randomized clinical comparative study was designed. Total of 16 patients were divided into two groups by 8 DSS and RA individuals. Transthoracic echocardiography was performed using B and M mode for the TAPSE measurement. The exclusion criterion for this study was already established pulmonary arterial hypertension. Conclusion: In both groups, TAPSE values were within normal range. Patients with DSS had a lower TAPSE measures compared to RA subjects. These findings show that patients with DSS are more sensitive to PAH than patients with RA. TAPSE method is a valuable non-invasive diagnostic procedure that may predict future development of pulmonary hypertension.
