- Abstract
The article discusses Sri Aurobindo's concept of the Spirit in the world and the role of individuals in that Spirit with the meaning, the process and the culmination of a mandala sand painting. The author contends that the art of sand painting personified the idea of continuity, self-maturation, rebirth and karma expressed by Aurobindo. This temporal concept of the self as exemplified in the life of Harry Haller, the ordinary hero of Hermann Hesse's work, "Steppenwolf," is discussed. The essence of duration as explained by French philosopher Henri Bergson is also discussed.
