- Title
Competing Girlhoods: Competition, Community, and Reader Contribution in The Girl's Own Paper and The Girl's Realm.
- Authors
Rodgers, Beth
- Abstract
The article examines the girls' periodicals the "Girl's Own Paper" and the "Girl's Realm," with a particular focus on their attempts to build a sense of community among their readership. According to the author, readers sometimes resisted editorial attempts to blend competing definitions of girlhood. It is suggested that girls' contributions to the magazines in the forms of essay contests and letters to the editor highlight differences in class, nationality, and age among the magazines' readership. Details on magazine stories depicting women's achievement and heroism are also presented. Other topics include imperialism, identity, and ephemera.
