- Title
Star on Ice: The Star of India in Alaska, 1918.
- Abstract
The article describes how the sailing ship Star of India/Euterpe worked for the Alaska Packers Association transporting salmon fishermen and fish cannery workers. The Star of India made regular voyages between San Francisco, California and Alaska in the early twentieth century. The article recounts how the sailor Iver Olson was on a voyage when the Star of India rescued sailors and passengers from two ships that had gone down in the ice of Alaska in April 1918. Particular attention is paid to living conditions on ships that sailed between the U.S. West Coast and Alaska and photographs are also provided.
