Marcus Garvey and President Obama's Missed Opportunity.
- Authors
Philp, Geoffrey
- Abstract
The author examines the refusal by U.S. President Barack Obama to sign a presidential pardon for Jamaican political leader Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who was falsely convicted on charges of mail fraud in 1923. He describes signs that Obama believed in the values for which Garvey had sacrificed his life. He also discusses the opportunity missed by Obama to address race and the erasure of African American heroes from the nation's collective memory due to his decision.
