- Abstract
The article traces the development of the Transmission Verses ("chuan-fa chieh") used by the six patriarchs of Ch'an (Zen Buddhism), starting with Bodhidharma in the fifth century. Disputes over the succession of the sixth patriarch, Hui-neng, are discussed, as is the ensuing split between Northern and Southern Ch'an factions. Hui-neng's "Platform Sutra" is discussed, and the texts of various versions of the Transmission Verses are then presented, with discussion of reasons for the differences among them.
