- Abstract
Is the basic metaphor of International Relations (IR) still up-to-date? IR taps into its respective object of study primarily through theoretical concepts that are characterised by the metaphor of proximity, which refers to identities or spatial relations. While the focus of IR with regard to the polar regions has been on issues of proximity, recent natural science research makes it clear that the Arctic and Antarctic are climatically significant across regions. This paper argues that a shift from the basic metaphor to embeddedness seems insightful insofar as the context of global political relations for billions of people is changing permanently as a result of advancing climate change, and should be reflected theoretically in IR. In this regard, approaches that reflect this embeddedness in terms of relevant actor constellations and spatial relations, and which attempt to translate embeddedness into institutional design appear more promising than what IR could offer conventionally.
