The article focuses on the U.S. Supreme Court's First Amendment jurisprudence in the cases West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette and National Institute of Family & Life Advocates v. Becerra (NIFLA) and protecting speaker autonomy. It mentions legacy of protecting freedom of thought and freedom of speech and importance of the First Amendment for the protection of intellectual autonomy from authoritarian officials and compelled ideological conformity.
