- Abstract
The article discusses technological advancements in the life sciences, synthetic biology, and the application and performance of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) regulatory framework as of July 2012. It states that scientists at the J. Craig Venter Institute announced the creation of a man-made, single-celled organism which has self-replicating capabilities in May 2010. The environmental risks associated with synthetic biology are addressed, along with the FDA's drug regulations.
