- Abstract
The article looks at the life of the first Lithuanian travel book writer, long-time press worker, and translator Julija Pranaitytė (1881-1944) and discusses the books she wrote after visiting other countries, the issues of the émigré magazine "Žvaigždė" she edited, and other achievements. Her works are analyzed with respect to their ethnic and intercultural aspects; attention is paid to her behavior in emigration, her contribution to Lithuanian culture, and her views. The relationship between interculturalism and ethnicity in her works is discussed in view of her proximity to other cultures through her life in the U. S., her studies abroad, her knowledge of several languages, and her activities as a translator, even though her patriotic attitude, her wish to preserve her nation's language and religion are evident. It may be stated that the writer and publisher used her knowledge and her work connected to other countries for the purpose of fostering Lithuanianness.
