- Abstract
How are children of Lithuanian descent who've come to Lithuania from abroad succeeding in integrating themselves into a Lithuanian-language environment? How are they solving problems of interculturality? What kinds of didactic, psychological, and social support do teachers provide? What challenges are experienced by parents whose children are being integrated into the Lithuanian educational system? These are the problem questions underlying the results of the research presented in this paper. The research was conducted in the Lithuanian middle school called Lietuvių namai, a unique school for Lithuanian children who have arrived or returned from abroad. The children attending this school have their own distinct experiences of adapting and integrating themselves, while the teachers find themselves in complex, non-traditional pedagogical situations. The research showed that Lithuanian-descent children feel a conflict of ethnic identity. They are Lithuanian and another nationality at one and the same time-this condition creates a unique and problematic double identity conflict exarcebated by the difficulties of adolescence. One direction of pedagogical help would be to foster an open and creative community where children and parents could realize their national aspirations and peculiarities as well as integrate into Lithuanian environments. Another would be an individual and sensitive approach to the child and his/her unique experience.
