- Abstract
Introduction: Conceptually, obesity is a nontransferable, multifactorial and complex disease that involves genetic, environmental, emotional factors and lifestyles. Aim: To describe the subjective aspects of weight reduction treatment in patients treated at an outpatient clinic of Nutrition. Methods and Methods: A descriptive exploratory study with a qualitative approach. Eight adult patients with overweight and obesity in nutritional treatment for weight reduction participated in the study. The data collection tool used was a semistructured interview and the information was submitted to thematic content analysis. Results and discussion: It should be noted that patients indicate that the search for nutritional treatment is mainly due to factors associated with self-esteem, aesthetic aspects and locomotion difficulties. Although some participants point a relation between weight reduction and the improvement in health conditions, the main aspect that motivates them to continue the nutritional treatment is the reduction of body measures. This quest for quick weight reduction is what encourages them to use restrictive diets and medications as strategies for weight loss. Patients also report that family support, dialogue and understanding attitude of the professional who accompanies the treatment are essential in this process. Conclusions: The weight reduction involves many subjective elements that constitute the treatment of obesity as a challenge to health professionals because it requires interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary actions.
