Damgaard, Erik
- Abstract
To assess the functions performed by parliament in the Danish political system presupposes adequate data on the development of parliament and on the roles of MPs today, as well as an appropriate model of the policymaking process. Data are presented on long-term changes in the lawmaking activity, the composition, and the structure of the Danish parliament. Some results of a current inquiry into the role of individual MPs are reported. Finally, the implications of this research for the functions of parliament are discussed. The article concludes that MPs, individually and through parties and parliament, perform linkage and leader recruitment functions, but their share in policymaking is more difficult to ascertain given alternative models of the policy- making process.
