- Abstract
In recent years, the number of patients suffering from lifestyle related diseases has been increasing. Therefore, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has decided to start a new health checkup system aiming at metabolic syndrome in Fiscal 2008. The Ministry has issued Exercise and Physical Activity for Health Promotion 2006 (Exercise Guide 2006) for health promotion, and it is also useful in health education. This is because physical activity is very effective in the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome. There are four key features in exercise education for metabolic syndrome : 1) making safe and effective exercise programs after estimating the amount of the patient's physical activity in daily life. 2) motivating them by behavioral science techniques. 3) encouraging them with monitoring how well they carry out their exercise programs. 4) managing the risk involved with exercise. The Exercise Guide 2006 summarizes the huge range of findings from studies on exercise for lifestyle related disease prevention. In the new health checkup and education system, medical staff (doctors, public health nurses, dietitians...) and health promotion instructors form a team to support the patients. It is expected that everyone related with this health education (including the patients) will use the Exercise Guide as the "common language" of the exercise education.
