- Abstract
The Reformers stressed the doctrine of "justification by faith alone" against the Roman Catholic teaching in order to underline the instrumental aspect of faith. In the 17th century the uniformity of Protestantism was broken and new interpretations concerning the role of faith came up with James Arminius, the antinomian tendencies, and the neonomianism of Richard Baxter. The response of Reformed orthodoxy was vigorous and in continuity with the teaching of the Reformers, but also enhanced such a legacy with clarifying distinctions. The purpose of this article is threefold: to introduce this historical period to the Portuguese speaking public, to refute the opinion that the Reformed of the 17th century distorted Calvin's theology, and to apply the teachings of Reformed orthodoxy to modern debates about justification such as some ecumenical endeavors and the New Perspective on Paul.
