- Abstract
The article discusses the benefits of reading poetry to students in kindergarten to third grade. The author notes that poetry provides enjoyment for children; exposes them to new vocabulary; and helps develop new insights into the self, others, and ordinary objects and settings. Children's poetry preferences are described, including discussions of rhymed and free verse, children's poets Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstien, and exposing children to new poetic forms. Strategies for incorporating poetry into early childhood curricula are discussed, and special attention is paid to the benefits of poetry anthologies.
