An essay is presented which discusses the Gaze theory in the context of Lacanian psychoanalytic theory and a study of the image of Polyxena in the Greek play "Hecabe" by Euripides. It investigates the play in relation to several elements of viewing including the relationship of tragedy to the city, the representation of women as objects to be looked at, and the different representations of sacrificial heroines as the one looking and being looked at.
