- Abstract
Some diseases which are comorbid with bipolar disorders, especially metabolic, endocrine and cardiovasculer cases result from the bipolar disorders itself or its treatment. With habits and life style, genetic tendency and side effects, this situation is becoming more striking. Individuals with bipolar disorder are differentially affected by several 'stress-sensitive' medical disorders notably circulatory disorders, obesity and diabetes mellitus. Subpopulations of bipolar disorders (BD) patients should be considered at high risk for diabetes mellitus (DM). The prevalence of DM in BD may be three times greater than in the general population. At the first examination, without pharmacologic agents, 50% of bipolar patients Hemoglobine A1c are more higher than normal levels. Signal mechanisms of glucocorticoid /insulin and immunoinflammatory effector systems are junction points out the pathophysiology between bipolar disorder and general medical cases susceptible to stress. Glycogen syntase kinase (GSK3) is a serine/treonine kinase and inhibits the transport of glucose stimulated by insulin. It affects diabetes, inflammation, cancer, Alzheimer and bipolar disorder. Diabetes when comorbid with bipolar disorder especially during its acute manic episodes, causes a serious situations that has a lifetime influence. The aim of this article is to discuss the etiological, clinical and therapeutic properties of a case comorbid with diabetes and bipolar disorder and review related literature.
