The article discusses the changes of emphasis and mechanics in the teaching of ballet techniques. In the eighteenth century, the movements of the arms were governed by the rules of opposition. Their function was to balance the body and mark the beat of the music, while in the nineteenth century, the concept of using the arms to make pleasingly harmonious shapes for their own sake gained steadily in importance.
