Presents a study on the difficulties battered women experienced when separating from the batterer, going to a shelter, and starting a new life. Methods, which include interviewing former residents of a shelter in Cape Town, South Africa; Results; Recommendations regarding the provision of shelters, bridging and counseling services as well as the social and legal recognition of battering as a crime.
