The article reports on a proposal which would lift protections for the endangered sage grouse and open up land in western states for mineral exploration. It states assistant secretary of land and minerals management Joe Balash of the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) informed attendees at the December 2018 annual conference for the American Exploration and Mining Association the DOI had released final drafts to revise conservation plans enacted during President Barack Obama's administration.
