- Abstract
This is qualitative documental research that aimed to understand Non-suicidal Self Injury (NSSI) from a critical view of Psychology, validating the perspective of the subject who self-injures and listing risk and protection factors for the incidence of the phenomenon. From the weekly meetings with female students who practiced NSSI, from a municipal elementary school, the actions and reflections arising from this space were documented in field diaries. Constructive-interpretative methodology was used for data organization and analysis. Based on the results, it was possible to identify, through the participants' statements, that psychological suffering is greater than the physical suffering resulting from self-injury and to list risk and protection factors for the incidence of the phenomenon, understanding NSSI as a way of coping with suffering of everyday life permeated by individual conflicts and violence, configuring it as an aggression that comforts.
