- Title
£130-million cut to grants hits UK physical scientists.
- Authors
Cressey, Daniel
- Abstract
The article reports that a 130 million is being cut from research grants awarded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The grants, which is supposed to be used for any topic related to engineering or physical sciences, will instead be used into funding research in specific government-defined areas. Philip Moriarty, a nanotechnologist at the University of Nottingham, declares that works on fundamental quantum mechanics would struggle for funding in the current EPSRC system. Others think that the shift from curiosity-driven research to applied programs is not necessarily bad.
