- Abstract
Based on the analysis of some extracts from Cervantes' work, this paper explores the relation between Wittgenstein's "language-game" and "form of life" with thoughts on language that we implicitly or explicitly find in Don Quixote. From certain linguistic practices such as naming or imitating the language of the cavalry, don Quixote introduces a different world into the reality of the other characters in the novel. In the famous chapter VIII of the first part of Cervantes' work, don Quixote calls the windmills "giants". While his use of language triggers a series of behaviors, or practices, linked to this labeling, the thesis of this work is that it is not a mere naming problem. Don Quixote's linguistic practices reveal that meaning is not stable, universal, or unambiguous, but that its nature is dynamic, contingent, and intersubjective, qualities that Wittgenstein attributes to his concepts of "language-game" and "form of life".
