- Abstract
The skin cancer represents one of the most commonly forms of human cancer. The topical administration of anticancer drugs is a promising alternative for reducing the side effects of the conventional treatments and for increasing drug targeting since they are delivered directly onto skin strata. In this context, the aim of the present paper was to prepare a new topical gel formulation based on sodium alginate and hyaluronic acid containing AS1411 aptamer-functionalized polymeric nanocapsules loaded with an antitumoral drug (5-Fluorouracil). The penetrability efficiency of 5-FU through the Strat-M membrane and the skin irritation potential of the topical formulations were evaluated. In vitro studies on tumor cell cultures aimed the investigation of the biocompatibility degree of these new formulations, as well as the evaluation of the efficiency of cytostatic activity for targeted anti-tumor therapy. The results showed that the obtained gel formulations exert a cytotoxic effect.
