- Abstract
The present study evaluated the prevalence of alcohol consumption considered to be risky among high school adolescents in public and private schools, in Ipatinga, Minas Gerais, and investigated the factors related to this consumption. A cross-sectional observational study was carried out with a sample of 523 adolescents enrolled in schools in the city of Ipatinga, consisting of 328 students in public schools, 195 in private schools, with an average age of 16.6 years. The Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test - AUDIT was applied in addition to a structured questionnaire for sociodemographic data and associated factors. The statistical analysis involved the chi-square test (p <0.05) and descriptive analysis. There was a total prevalence of risk consumption of 25.9% (AUDIT). Low maternal education, alcoholism of siblings and friends, the fact that they live alone or with other nonfamily members and school failure are factors related to a higher chance of alcohol risk consumption among high school adolescents. Regarding the type of school, there was no association with risky consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the epidemiological scenario of this health problem, in order to reduce the prevalence of alcohol consumption and intervene in its associated factors.
