- Abstract
Introduction: Gastric cancer (GC) due to high mortality is considered a serious disease and a public health problem, being commonly diagnosed in advanced stages in Brazil, thus worsening the survival rate, despite the relative decrease in incidence. Objective: To evaluate aspects related to gastric cancer mortality in an oncology referral hospital in Maranhão. Method: This is a descriptive and retrospective observational study of a quantitative and documentary approach, whose data were obtained by reviewing the medical records of patients undergoing GC treatment in the period from 2011 to 2014. Results: The initial sample was 96 medical records confirmed with gastric neoplasia, of which 33 died, most of them male, aged over 70 years, social class D, incomplete fundamental level, diagnosed in advanced stages of the disease (stage IV), with localized tumor in the proximal region of the stomach. Conclusion: The work faced challenges regarding the lack of some data during the collection, so that some results were compromised. The other aspects studied with regard to GC mortality are similar to other data in the literature and point out the importance of early diagnosis and primary prophylaxis as ways of combating mortality due to such neoplasia.
