- Abstract
Environmental management is linked to a new management strategy aimed at fully sustainable business, and the results achieved are visible in financial, social and environmental fields. It is focused on continuous improvement, and large organisations, policy makers, consultants and researchers have explored environmental management systems as an effective method to actively address environmental issues. Environmental management is divided into products and systems. Product management is further broken down into environmental labelling, self-assessment-based labelling, and declaration-based labelling. Systems management is divided into two main systems, ISO 14001 and EMAS, which are the most popular environmental management systems. The environmental friendliness of companies is a crucial issue for the responsible consumer, who feels obliged to protect nature in every situation. Because of this need to protect the environment, companies try to show their responsibility to consumers, and one of the most common ways is to implement environmental management system ISO 14001 or EMAS in the company. The growing relevance and interest in environmental management in this form of management is also shown by A. Pohle, K. Blind and D. Neustroev (2018), who established that publications on systems have a significant impact on citation behaviour in academic literature. This means, for example, that an environmental management document that deals with ISO 14001 is cited more times on average than another document on the same topic which does not address the system. Deploying these systems often seems too costly for businesses, and the benefits of the systems are less than the deployment costs. Therefore, this article provides a more detailed analysis of environmental management systems, to show the real impact of the systems on businesses. The aim of the article is to determine the impact of the implementation of environmental management systems on the performance of international business. The problem: does the implementation of environmental management systems ISO 14001 and EMAS affect international business performance? Methods used: analysis, synthesis and systematisation of scientific articles and books. An analysis of studies by various authors found that the benefits of environmental management systems are similar everywhere, even though entities from different countries were studied: benefits in terms of risk management, better tracking of internal operations, competitive advantage, environmental benefits, and corporate financial performance. The order of importance of these advantages differs the most: some place more emphasis on environmental benefits, others on tracking internal operations or improving the company’s image. These differences may be due to different national markets, national regulations, or cultural attitudes. The research also shows that environmental benefits are closely linked to a company’s image: the more a company demonstrates its environmental merits, the more the company’s image and competitive advantage improve. In addition to the advantages, companies also face difficulties in implementing environmental management systems. The most commonly identified difficulties are the high cost of implementing systems, the lack of state support, and motivational factors such as a lack of management motivation and interest, difficulties in motivating employees, and difficulty in understanding the benefits of environmental management systems.
