- Abstract
The article reports on the evolution of methods over the years to quantify precipitation over land. In the fourth century BCE, a network of rain gauges was used in India to collect observations for land tax calculations and to inform agricultural practices. Christopher Wren’s tipping-bucket rain gauge that was invented in the 1660s heralded a surge of interest in meteorology.
