- Title
PROVIDING ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY FOR THE UNSERVED: A FREE-MARKET SOLUTION.
- Authors
Ballonoff, Paul
- Abstract
The article focuses on the use of free markets to aid in providing electricity to people without power in parts of the world where a dominant, reliable utility service does not exist. The author explores the case of India, where free-market suppliers of electricity are illegal. It is emphasized that despite the existence of monopoly supply companies in developing countries, many of them are not reliable. The author contends that poor people will pay for reliable supplies of electricity, if the price is the same as alternative lighting sources such as kerosene or bio-fuels.
