- Title
"Rather Than Ever Milk Again": Shaker Sisters' Refusal to Milk at Mount Lebanon and Watervliet - 1873-1877.
- Authors
Stiles, Lauren A.
- Abstract
The article discusses historical incidents in the Shaker communities of Mount Lebanon and Watervliet, New York, both part of the Mount Lebanon Shaker bishopric, in which the sisters of the group refused to undertake chores involving milking cows. A discussion of changing New England farming practices, focusing especially on the division of labor by gender during the nineteenth century, is presented. Second in the Ministry Giles B. Avery is recorded as having responded to the complaint with fear that such an uprising would spread throughout all the Shaker communities. Other topics include the balance of power between Shaker men and women, the impact of agricultural innovations on farming practices in the late 19th century, and issues with declining Shaker membership upon the division of labor.
