- Abstract
Cooperatives, with their participatory management and the autonomy of their members, have undergone signifi cant expansion in Brazil. This explanatory, qualitative and time series research uses secondary data, in order to study the impact of cooperatives in the period 1990 to 2007. It is a cross-sectional study that discusses these societies through self-management; distinctions between these and mercantile companies; and their social and economic importance, among other factors. It is observed that the essence of the cooperative ends up succumbing to the need for effi ciency, and that many have rigid, infl exible structures and high administrative costs, with results that are far from ideal. In effect, this study demonstrates, through ex post facto data, the growth potential of these organizations, particularly when the members are effectively involved in the management and operations.
