- Abstract
Introduction: Indirect blood pressure measurement in the lower limbs is not routinely used in clinical practice, but can be an alternative technique when the procedure is contraindicated in the upper limbs. Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence available in the literature on the indirect blood pressure measurement in the lower limbs. Methods: An integrative review. The search for studies was carried out in the Academic Search Premier, Cinahl, Embase, Lilacs, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases, using the terms Ankle, Arterial Pressure, Blood Pressure, Blood Pressure Determination, Leg, Lower Extremity, Thigh and their synonyms. The sample consisted of 23 studies. The methodological quality of the studies included was assessed using the AXIS tool and the results were analyzed in descriptive form. Results: Data were presented in three thematic categories: blood pressure values, blood pressure measurement methods and specialist recommendations. Significant differences were found when comparing values measured in the upper (arm) and lower limbs (thigh, calf and ankle) and when comparing blood pressure values obtained with specific cuff placement techniques, posture and patient positioning. Works published by experts describe particularities related to the procedure performed on the lower limbs. Conclusion: Indirect blood pressure measurement in the joint or thigh can be considered an alternative method of measuring blood pressure when the technique cannot be performed on the arm.
