- Title
Return to Conventional Wisdom on Candy Cummings.
- Authors
Arcidiacono, David
- Abstract
Until the early 20th century, conventional wisdom held that William Arthur "Candy" Cummings invented the curveball, and on that basis he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. Recent thought has reversed course however, often concluding that not only was Cummings not the inventor of the curve, but also that he wasn't especially talented and may be the most undeserving player in the Hall of Fame. This article will reacquaint readers with Cummings' pitching accomplishments, curveball or not, and examine Cummings' contributions to the development of the pitch.
